Alan's 93 2-Door Pajero with the rack installed |
Alan uses his 93 Pajero as a daily driver, and for wheeling, so, like
most 2 door drivers, he is always looking for more storage space. After toying with
several options, he decided to try the Surco safari rack to hold the coolers, gas cans,
and bulky items that always seem to make their way on wheeling trips.
The Surco Safari rack is made of aluminum 3/4" square tubing with a 5"
stanchion. It has an aluminum floor and a black powder coat finish, and is available in a
range of sizes from 40 x 50 inches, up to 50 x 84 inches. To fit a standard Montero
(without a factory rack), you will need to purchase the GM100 mounting kit. The Montero
Sport needs the CH100 mounting kit. Various kits are also available to mount the rack to
the popular aftermarket modular roof bars.

Not only does the Surco hold a lot of cargo, but it looks great too |

A close up view of Alan's modified mount, adapated for a gutterless
roof |
"These are the pictures of the pajero with the rack on. I had to
gotten gutter mounts with it but since my van did not have any gutters I could not use it,
the only other option was a channel mount which they had and I thought that it might work
but did not as it was to wide to fit properly into my channel.
I then had to take the gutter mount, bend the bottom end till it took the shape of the
inside channel and then screwed them down tight using allot of silicone on the bottom and
top to make it as leak proof as possible.
Then I just mounted the rack as normal as the instructions specify and it fits very nice.
So far I have had 2 very large coolers I one barbeque grill on the top and it holds them
without deforming at all which has me very pleased".
